A Holistic Approach to Health

There are 4 things everyone needs to be healthy.

I don’t believe we can have true well being without taking a holistic approach to our health and our life.  There are 4 things everyone needs to be healthy. A person needs eat healthy, be physically active, have a spiritual connection, and they need love.  Each of these things build and interact upon the other.

Now let me clarify here, when I say health, I mean the health of the whole person.  Health of the physical, mental and spiritual well being of the whole. I don’t believe we can have true well-being without taking a holistic approach to life. Each thing determines our mental state and outlook so we can be all we are meant to be.

What does the word Holistic conjure up in your mind?  

For my husband it makes him think hippy, new age malarky.  This surprised me for several reasons. For one he married me, a hippy, gypsy wannabe.  It also surprised me because to him it had a negative connotation. Now let’s not go to the ball and chain jokes here. We are very happily married.

The medical community has become so specialized over the last several decades it has given word holistic a bad wrap. If you have a broken bone you go to the Orthopedic. An autoimmune issue you go to the Rheumatologist. Have a problem with your heart you see the Cardiologist. No doctor treats the person as a whole anymore.  And honestly, it is no wonder people are getting sicker.

Physical Health

Without our physical health we can not accomplish our dreams, passions, desires. Dang, without our physical health some of us can’t even get out of bed let alone anything else.  I have often told my husband that if there is one thing we should focus on it is our physical health. Physical health should be one of the most important things because it impacts so many aspects of our life; including our ability to do more for our family and more spiritually.

The foundation of our physical health is what we eat.  We can not out exercise our diet. We are a chemistry lab. A chemistry lab that thinks and moves. It is not possible to get good out of bad.  If we don’t feed it what it needs we will get in return some of the same strange things we put in to it.  What we eat directly impacts our physical health and our mental health. You can not have one and not have the other.

What does our body need? Nothing more than what our Grand Creator has given us.  Whole organic fresh food. It was simply put in Genesis 1:29 “Then God said: “Here I have given you every seed-bearing plant that is on the entire earth and every tree with seed-bearing fruit.  Let them serve as food for you.” I try to grow as much of my own organic food as possible on our farmstead.

Physically Active

Movement affects the chemistry of this lab too.  The first thing a doctor wants from their patient after surgery or injury is to get them moving.  The simple act of getting out of the bed and sitting in a chair is movement and that can set us on the path to healing.  It allows better lung capacity. It even helps the bowels to get moving again. We need to move every day. It doesn’t have to be cross-fit or a marathon but it does need to be something. And it needs to be enough. Everyone is different and their abilities are different but even the guy in the wheelchair is encouraged to exercise, engage the muscles and get the heart pumping a little more.

For myself, it has been a challenge to find the right kind of exercise that will not make me worse off.  Because of my genetic condition my ligaments and tendons are loose and weak. I have found that certain types of exercise can make things worse.  That does not mean I should not exercise. It means I have to find the right kind of movement. For me it is pilates type movements, walking and working around the homestead.

Spiritual Connection

I know there are many that think this is the foundation of health.  However, each of these things including a spiritual connection, are at the heart of a person’s health. This is about a holistic approach to health, looking at the whole. Each are interlinked and just as important as the next.

Spiritual health is directly connected to our physical.  The Bible says at Matthew 5:3 “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need…” Understanding our spiritual need and finding joy in knowing our purpose on this planet will greatly improve our outlook on things. Genesis 1:28 tells us the purpose of life when it says ‘“Further, God blessed them, and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many, fill the earth, subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving on the earth.”’ It should be of no surprise we find so much joy caring for our pets, working in a garden and simply being out in nature.

Love

The Bible tells us to love our God whole souled and to love our neighbor as ourselves in Matthew 22: 37-39. That would require self love before we could love others. So be kind to yourself and others. Look for the good in every situation. If there is a way you can contribute to others while not hurting yourself in the process do it.

Do you see how all four of these things tie in together.  We show ourselves love by eating clean and moving daily, this allows us to have mental clarity and the physical ability to focus on our purpose which is to love our Creator, enjoy what he has given us and love each other.  You can not have one without the other. That is why a holistic approach to health and life are so important.
